She was black and white and would sit on your lap and cuddle with you just like a cat. Many times she would give my hand a bath, licking her tongue all over. I loved her so much! She was only a year old when I had to move in with my aunt. She would not allow my rats to be in the house so I had to put them in the garage.

The garage was well ventilated and didn’t get too hot or cold during the summer season so I wasn’t too worried about my rats having to live there for a month or two. Little did I know there was decon (rat poison) hidden throughout the garage. My rats have never been able to get out of there cage before so I was not worried about them escaping but because of moving the cage. The wires had somehow managed to bend. A week had gone by and Addy, Flower, Luna, Omarah, Mika, and Lita had all been very good rats until one day I woke up in the morning went out to the garage to check on them and found Addy missing. After searching for several minutes I found her covered in oil hiding in a corner. I took her inside and gave her a warm bath and put her back in her cage with the rest of her sisters. I did not know at that time that poison was slowly going through her system. The symptoms started to show the next day. I woke up and her hand was purple. I thought maybe she had broken it, but it did not feel broken. I took her out of the cage and held her for awhile debating on what to do next. Eventually I decided it was time to call vet clinics to see if anyone could give a suggestion on what to do next. Though every vet clinic I talked to said they do not deal with rats.

Within several hours from noticing Addy’s arm in the morning she got worse.. Addy was squealing in pain when touched and started to pee out blood. I had no clue what was wrong and knew it was not due to a broken bone. I cried so hard while watching her die. It looked so painful! She would gasp for air. Her whole body had paralyzed. When I explained what was going on to my aunt she than mentioned that there was decon in the garage. That’s when I knew what happened. I took a quick search online to see what was happing to my poor ADDY. She was dying of internal bleeding. A very painful process that can take a mouse or rat several days, even up to a week to die. Most don’t die from the internal bleeding but from dehydration. I called the vet clinics in my area again and managed to find a vet willing to put her down. She wasn’t even a year old when she died.

Decon is by far one of the worst things to do for rodent control. Not only is there severe pain from bleeding to death, but there’s starvation, dehydration, and paralyzation. There are more humane ways to get rid of mice and rats instead of using poison. There is the humane mouse trap from PETA. That way you can catch them alive and release them back into the woods. Don’t worry about them finding their way back to your house. That’s just a myth as long as you’re not releasing them in your own back yard and if you are INSISTING on getting a trap that kills them. Get a normal snap mouse trap. DO NOT USE GLUE TRAPS! Glue traps can also take a long time to kill mice/rats. Mouse traps are still one of the fastest ways to kill a mouse/rat. Though I would prefer it if you didn’t kill them at all. I Hope you all think about Addy’s story before you go buying any kind of mice/rat poison.

PS. I love you Addy!

photo taken of Addy at 1 year old

IM BACK!!!!

WOW it has been awhile since I have been able to write…. I understand there’s really no good excuse for it except that I just did not have internet access for the last several months and with a almost 2 year old child it’s not like I can just take my lab top to a café. So anyways here I am again, now with internet again so I plan to blog at least once a week again… I do apologize for not being on here, but during the time I did not have internet access I have thought about many different things to blog about that will hopefully be interesting to someone. Even i assumed it was only bulls and cows who had there noses hooked. Unfortunately i was wrong as usual when it comes to animal cruelty.

Last Friday i had decided to check out a farm sanctuary. I love to see farm animals in a happy and safe environment. The goats looked happy, the cows came over to me to get petted and of course to steal the treats i had for them. I than went over to the pigs to see how they where and what i saw shocked me. It looked to me as if each pig had a nail jammed into there nose. It did not look very comfortable. Since i never saw anything like that i asked the owner and was told that it is to keep the pigs from rooting and making a mess. I was also told it was a harmless procedure that the pig hardly feels. After hearing that i was very upset in more than one way.

Firstly i was upset that the owner tried to say it was harmless. If this ring caused no pain to the pig than the pigs would still use there noses to dig. The whole reason this nose rings works is because it causes pain to the pig when they push there nose to the ground. Also this ring has to be replaced every once in awhile when it falls off. That means these pigs will have to continuously have rings pinched into there noses.

Second I was upset at the fact that rooting is a natural instinct for a pig to do. To keep a pig from being able to root can cause the pig to become depressed and frustrated. Pigs also dig to get the right nutrients they need from the dirt. Without this ability to dig the pig can become very malnourished unless the owner feeds the pig a specific diet to meet the pigs needs. A diet that most pig owners are not willing to pay for.

There are a few alternatives to nose rings. If you are afraid your pig will dig underneath the fence post you can have the ground cemented around the fence lining. Than just make sure the habitat your pig is living in is suitable for a pig to dig. Instead of adjusting the pigs life around you adjust your life around him. If a person cannot handle a pig digging up there land than it is best not to own one at all.

The sad existence of a backyard dog can be very lonely

I'm still up in Minnesota right now and was reading the Mesabi Daily News and found this interesting article written by the Mesabi Humane Society. I thought it was worth sharing so here it is...

"You see one in every community: a dog tied day-after-day to a porch or back fence, lying lonely on a pad of bare, packed dirt. The water bowl -if there is one- is usually empty or just out of reach. Abandoned -but chained up, backyard dogs cannot move to comfort, shelter or companionship. In winter, they shiver; in summer, they languish. Year-round they suffer.

Even thousands of years ago when human and other animals lived outside, there was a cave or den for shelter, and people and dogs lived in small groups or packs.

The truth is, times have changed, but we and the dogs haven't. We are both pack animals; we are not solitary animals. tigers and pandas are solitary animals that tend to live alone except at mating time. Domesticated, companion dogs no longer have packs of other dogs to live with, so they need to be members of human families -surrogate packs.

And both people and dogs are "den" animals. This is why dogs can be house-trained so easily. They want shelter in a safe, secure den -your house- and they want to go to relieve themselves.

Of course, dogs can be forced to live outside alone and away from their human pack. But to force this kind of life on a dog is one of the worst things you can do. It goes against the dog's two instincts -the needs for a pack and den.

Dogs can offer people the gifts of steadfast devotion, abiding love and joyful companionship. Unless people can responsibly accept these offerings and take the time to return them in kind, it would be best for them not to get a dog. A sad, lonely, bewildered dog tied out back only suffers, and what sort of person wants to maintain suffering?"

*picture taken from the website Unchain your dog

Having Fun without Harming Fish

This week i have been up in Minnesota visiting family at the cabin. There was many activities to enjoy this week. We went canoeing, and had a camp fire, we also of course went swimming, and did a lot of tanning, but the one thing I DID NOT do was go fishing.

Why you may ask? Well because fish are animals too and like animals fish feel pain. That hook that goes into there mouths hurts just as much as a hook that would go into a cats. So why is it ok to torture fish like this? Because its tradition!!! As long as it is tradition, torture can be ignored.

The other issue is health. Im sure if you have ever been pregnant you have been told by doctors to be very careful eating fish. If eating fish is so bad while pregnant why would you want to put it in your body while not pregnant? I would rather not eat fish than take the chance of consuming mercury, PCB's (which can cause liver cancer), lead, and even arsinic.

There are many other reasons why we should eat fish including environmental and the effects of commercial fishing, but since im only talking about fishing on vacation i will leave those subjects for another time. So instead of taking out the fishing pole and sticking a hook through a poor fishes mouth why not grab the canoe or boat and take a trip around the lake looking at the beautiful scenery.

* photo taken by my grandma, cousin faith on left, me on right

Get Fuzzy!

S0 if anyone gets the Sunday newspaper you have probably read the "Get Fuzzy" comic strip. It's a comic about a guy and his pet dog and cat. I read this strip weekly and i thought i would share one of theres on animal rights. Enjoy!

Edit: Unfortunately no matter how hard i try i cant get the whole comic strip to be visible on this blog so if you click on the "Get Fuzzy" link it will bring you straight to that comic. Trust me, its worth looking at. I will continue to try and put it on this blog but i don't think it will work.

Ag in the Classroom

<img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; One of the first things I noticed was that the catalog was written by the Farm Bureau federation, I knew than it would be very biased. The catalog contained seventy pages of different lesson plans and games you could buy to teach your students about Agriculture. As I was flipping through the pages I was a little shocked to see what the teachers where allowed to teach their children. For instance from this catalog I found you could order coloring books for grades K-3, that show how “important” fur farmers are. There was also many other videos, posters, games teachers could order for their students. A video called Fur: The Fabric of a Nation which talked about how great (rolls- eyes) the fur nation is.

There was also plenty of livestock games and lesson plans too. Teachers are allowed to order Cattle and Swine by-product charts for grades K-12. Also my all time favorite one was the Moo 2 You Video grades K-4. The description went like this…

"Using music, game shows, and other fast moving experiences Mrs. Moo teaches students where milk and cheese come from, how they are produced, what life on a dairy farm is like, and the importance of dairy foods for strong and healthy bones and teeth."

I am sure nowhere in this video does it explain that dairy cows are forced to get pregnant, than after giving birth have their calves taken away to be turned into veal calves, beef cows, and more dairy cows. I can also guarantee that the video also showed cows out on a big green field. Living out there days eating green grass in the warm sun and coming in to be milked when they felt like it.

This is what are schools are allowed to teach our children. Even from the early age of 5 they are allowed to watch biased videos and play games made by the meat industries that teach them that eating meat and drinking milk is ok. Nowhere does the catalog have anything about the side effects of raising cattle; nowhere is a lesson plan for teaching what happens in a slaughterhouse. Of course the meat industry wouldn’t show that, they wouldn’t want children to know the TRUTH!

Why is it that teachers are allowed to teach their students about the “goods” of eating meat and using fur but when a teacher tries to teach their students about vegetarianism they are fired? After reading that catalog it makes me really tempted to home school my daughter.

Thursday's in Ghent, Belgium declared "Veggie Day"

Yup you heard that right! My state just yesterday passed a law saying that no bars and work places can allow smoking within the building. The only reasons listed on the news was to protect people's health, which yes is a very good reason but what about the affects to the environment and to animals? So i figured i would post about that here since the news doesn't seem to want to talk about those kind of issues.

Smoking causes Lung Cancer! This has been proven over and over by the thousands who have smoked and died from lung cancer, but yet smoking companies are determined to try and prove that Cigarettes are harmless. They do this by testing cigarette smoke on countless amounts of animals. Beagles, chickens, monkeys, cats, and many more animals are being tested by cigarette company's even though U.S law does not require these companies to test. Even Britain in 1997 banned all smoking experiments. If your trying to picture a dog holding a cigarette and smoking it you need to take a step back into reality, these animals are not given a choice to smoke. The most common methods of testing animals and smoke are...

cutting holes into beagles throats to force them to breath in smoke

pregnant monkeys are injected with nicotine to see if the fetus will become deformed

mask are put onto rats and mice to keep them inhaling the smoke

electrodes are often put into the penises of animals to measure how smoke effects sexual performance

There are many more experiments done every year but these few are the most common. American Spirit Cigarettes and Santa Fe Natural Cigarette are the only cigarettes that i know of that do not test on animals but you smoke these cigarettes you are still causing problems to the environment and to your health.

Smoking and Environment do not belong together! There is over 4000 chemicals in each cigarette. That's 4000 chemicals that are going into your lungs and into the air. YUCK! Another huge environmental problem with cigarettes is that everyday people are throwing cigarette butts onto the ground. It takes an average of 25 years for those cigarette butts to decompose into the ground. So in the meantime they are being carried into the water systems and eaten by fish and birds who mistaken them for worms or other kinds of food. Most of these animals often die from eating cigarette butts. Another problem is how much land is used to grow the plants in order to make cigarettes. These plants are often sprayed with tons of pesticides that go into the ground. Instead of all that land used for tobacco crops, we could plant thousands of trees in there place to help the environment and the animals living in that area.

Hundreds of our tax dollars goes into the cigarette company whether we like it or not. It's going into all the animal testing and into producing tobacco. If we want to stop this than people need to stop smoking. By not buying there products there will be no demand and hopefully we could phase out tobacco completely. So if any of you smoke just remember that every time you buy a pack of cigarettes you are supporting countless amounts of animals who have to suffer till death.

Some interesting facts

Eighty-nine percent of people who ever try a cigarette try by age 18. Almost no one starts the smoking habit during adulthood.

Seventy percent of adolescent smokers say they would never have started if they could choose again. That's because the nicotine in cigarettes is addictive. College has been keeping me very busy and i have been writing essay after essay for my classes (of course all but one has to do with animal rights) Anyways it has saddened me of Obama's choice and i am also very shocked by many of the comments about this from people who say they are animal rights activist, but before i get into that part i will explain what Obama did.

About a week ago Obama said they would be taking in a Purebred Portuguese Water Dog. Though he said to the millions of people that he would be adopting a dog from a shelter. He instead took in a dog from a breeder. Though there excuse is that the dog was returned to the breeder from previous owners so because of that the dog is considered "homeless." I strongly disagree with that but i will get to that in a second. They are also using the excuse that Bo (thats what Obama and his family named the dog) was a present from the Kennedy's.

Ok now onto why i disagree with everything and even a little suspicious about how they came to acquire Bo. Firstly Bo was NOT a rescue. This dog would have found a home even if the Obama's had not taken Bo in, unlike the millions of dogs sitting in shelters about to be put down, Bo would have not been put down. Even the breeder doesnt see Bo as a rescue dog. From a yahoo article here is a piece from about what the breeder said...

"Bo's breeder, Martha Stern of Boyd, Texas, said she doesn't consider Bo a rescued dog. Owners of dogs from the kennel she and her husband run must sign contracts requiring them to return the dogs to the Sterns if they do not work out, she said. Bo went from his first home, in Washington, to the Kennedys' trainer in Virginia, and now to the White House, she said."

There is also the odd facts surrounding this dog. When this litter was born it was named the Hope & Change litter. The first owner also lived in Washington, even though the breeder lives in Texas. Bo was also returned to the breeder right before the timeline when Obama planned to get a dog and the puppy had spent a month with the Kennedy's dog trainer before heading to the white house. All of this seems to be a little odd?

Im just a little confused how people who call themselves animal rights activist can support his choice. The puppy came from a breeder, whether it is a good breeder or bad breeder it is STILL a breeder. You would think with all the issues about puppy mills that getting from a breeder would be the last thing people would want to do. This dog was NOT a rescue. Bo would have found a good home eventually. Obama had the chance to lead the way of a new trend in rescuing dogs but instead he has lead the way of supporting breeders. People like to follow trends and this breed of dog will become the new trend. Breeders good and bad will start breeding this breed and we will start to see Portuguese Water Dogs iall over the place and in all the petshops. This comic is a very good example of what will happen. Obama also does not have an excuse that his daughter is allergic. They could have simply gone to petfinder and look up dogs in shelters that are hypoallergenic. Im sure no shelter would have hesitated to tell him they have the right kind of dog for him..

Anyways im done ranting about this. PLEASE ADOPT!!!

---
Photo of Bo taken from Yahoo! news

Easter is on its way!!

Easter is coming in six days so I thought it would be good to discuss. Every year children all around the world get all excited for Easter. I mean who wouldn’t? Hanging out with family, tons of candy, and the search for the Easter basket is always the best. But there are some major DON’TS that happen every year at Easter time. So here is my list of DON’TS and how to make them DO’S!

1.DON’T Buy that cute little bunny for your child
Every year around this time hundreds of parents buy their child a rabbit to surprise them on Easter. Unfortunately many of these bunnies will be released into the woods, end up dead or in animal shelters within a few weeks. If you are determined to get your child a bunny realize that this pet would be your responsibility NOT your child’s responsibility. But instead of going through all the effort of taking care of a rabbit buy your child a toy bunny. This way you are not adding to the overpopulation of animals and your child will be happy.

2.DON’T use real eggs for Easter
It may be fun to color those eggs every year, but think of where those eggs came from. Eggs don’t pop into thin air; they come from chickens that are locked in battery cages for their whole entire life. When you buy eggs that is what you are supporting. Doesn’t sound like much fun does it? Instead how about using those plastic eggs that open, this way you can put candy inside for a surprise and if you still want to paint eggs you can buy those ceramic eggs that are usually found in craft stores, paint those, then hide them.

3.DON’T buy milk chocolate
Milk chocolate is of course made with MILK! But did you know how milk is made? Cows don’t produce milk on their own. They need to be pregnant or recently gave birth to produce milk. This mean that thousands of cows are being artificially inseminated every day and thousands more are having their calves taken away. Where do the calves go? Well the females will normally become milk cows and the males will either become veal cows or beef cows, but more likely they will become veal. This is very simple to change, just buy chocolate without milk. It does exist, most dark chocolates do not have milk in them and you can also buy vegan chocolates online.

By doing these simple little things you can make your Easter cruelty free this year.

Im writing again

<meta equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; I have been fighting with myself on whether or not i wanted to continue with it. I didn't want to continue if no one was going to read it, but then after thinking about it these past few weeks i thought, So What! So what if only two or three people are reading it. If even one of those people read something i wrote and take it with them into the future it would be a lot better then doing nothing at all. So here i am writing again. I don't plan to write everyday, but do plan to try to write something at least once or twice a week. To everybody who may be reading this blog please if you enjoy this blog, email it to your friends, tell other people about it. The more people that subscribe to this or are viewing it the more i will be posting. Also to those who had been reading this blog when i stopped, well i am sorry it took me so long to realize i shouldn't give up.

Unnecessary sanctuary killings!

It is extremely sad to find articles like this and something needs to be done to stop this. Dancing star sanctuary is putting down tons of its animals claiming financial reasons, but yet Tobias the president receives a yearly salary of $285,500 and his wife who is vice president is getting $244,000 and the vice president of finance is receiving $240,000. Also the whole group has about $43 million in assets! Hmm does this sound like financial issues? If they really cared about the animals why not cut back there salary's and use that money to feed the animals instead of putting them down.

The sanctuary is supposed to rescue animals not kill them!

Anyways i would like you guys to sign this petition to stop the unnecessary killings
http://tinyurl.com/barwcg

Also click on this link to get the full article about what is going on at Dancing star sanctuary

Tree Hugger!!!!

Tree Hugger has got to be one of my favorite websites. This site has so much info about going green. I love it so much and am really excited to share it with everybody else who hasn't already seen this site. Anyways it has lots of list for going green, such as How to green your wedding, green your child, green your yard, even how to green your sex life. My favorite one of course is How To Green: Pets! Here is the list they give you on greening your pet. (On the site it does go into detail for each thing, but that would give you an excuse not to check the website out so im just going to post a short list, if you want the facts for each one, Such as why you should adopt from a shelter then click on Treehugger and find the green pets page and read the whole thing.) To make it even more simple for you here is the direct link to the Green pets page.

1. Adopt from a shelter
2.Spay or neuter your pet
3.Rein in your pets; protect native wildlife
4.Swap out the junk food
5.Clean up their poop
6.Give them sustainable goods
7.Use natural pet-care and cleaning products
8.Pets, not fads
9.Melt the ice, nicely
10.Tag your pet
11.Compost their poop
12.Be a pet chef
13.Get crafty
14.Get ticks off
15.Offset your pet

Also here are some GREAT statistics that come from that site too!

39 million: the number of birds killed annually by domestic cats – in Wisconsin (The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service)!

66 million: the number of pet cats in the United States; The Final Nail is an AMAZING site for any animal rights activist. Its so easy to use! When you click on the website you have a choice between Laboratory suppliers, fur farms, trapping, and slaughterhouses. You click on one of those (lets use slaughterhouse as an example) and it will bring you to a page where you can click your state. After clicking on the state you will get a list of all the slaughterhouses in your state, what kind of animals they kill at that slaughterhouse and EVEN the address and phone number. This is great for anyone who wants to write letters or set up a stand outside the place.

Anyways it can be very surprising when you see how many fur farms, slaughterhouses, etc could be around your state. When i checked it out i was shocked. I had already known there was a cow slaughterhouse in my town but i had no clue there was a HUGE veal farm only 30 minutes away from me, also i was quite upset when i saw that my state has 77 fur farms!!!!!

Anyways have fun checking out the website and tell me what you think!!!

Why you should be Vegetarian !

Ethical: Animals grown for food are treated very bad. Its not like in the olden days when i hunter would take his bow and arrow and hunt down his food. Now we have hundreds of factories that grow cows, chickens, pigs, you name it. The livestock is packed into tight spaces with little or no light. I suggest that you watch this video.

Pledge to Be Veg for 30 Days!

Heath reasons: Being a vegetarian is a great thing to do if you want to stay healthy. There is so much fat in meat and it is proven that people who eat meat have a 50% higher chance of a heart attack then a non-meat eater. Plus now a days there are so many livestock farms that are drugging there cows up with so much crap. Is that really something you want going through your body?

Environment: Ok so hopefully you care about the environment. Well by eating meat you are contributing to the problem. See cows eat ALOT, way more then an average person eats on a daily basis. Well it takes machines and other technology to grow that food. Which means gas is being used to run those machines and most likely there are pesticides to keep bugs from eating the plants for the cows and all of that affects the environment. Plus cows fart alot. So the less amount of cows eaten the lass amount of cows bred for demand, which means less amount of FARTS!

World Hunger: Like i was saying before, cows eat ALOT more then twice as much as we do on a daily basis. Now imagine if we stopped eating meat an instead grew that food for human consumption. Think of the millions of people that could be fed?

Anyways i could go on and on with this. Please take the 30 day veg pledge! I know you can do it. Its really not too hard. Some people can do it easily with one try. For me it took 3 tries and finally i managed the 30 days and i have never ate meat ever since and i still have to cook meals for my meat eating husband, but i haven't slipped once. So if i can do it i know you can too. There is really so many great reasons to stop eating meat. The first is the fact that thousands of animals are being killed daily for our taste buds and its not a quick simple death. Its a horrible life and then a horrible death. Plus it is so much more healthy for you. Anyways all i ask is that you attempt it. That's ALL!! if by the end of the 30 days you don't like it well then go back to eating meat, but really is it going to hurt you to try? PLUS you will help the environment a ton! IF you have any questions about why you should be veg well there are plenty of websites to explain that but i also plan to blog about that too, but not tonight its getting a little late...

GOOD LUCK!!!

Very First Blog! (Intro)

Ok so this is my very first blog. I guess for the first blog i will explain what i want this site to be about. OH! and of course i will tell you about myself... Well i am a vegetarian, I am also a big hippy and i love to be doing anything that could help out the environment. I love animals! I have 2 cats, (Chibi and mooshoo) 3 Ferrets, (meemo,Bacardi,Bella) and 2 rats, (flower and Addy). I also have a rat rescue called Little Friends Rat Rescue. Currently i don't have any rats up for adoption, but when that changes i will post a blog letting people know. Now when it comes to animals i really don't know what to call myself. I wouldn't quite say I'm for Animal Rights cause there are a few things i don't agree with but yet i also don't think Animal Welfare goes far enough, so i guess I'm in the middle.

OK so the purpose of this blog is to write about animal issues and the environment. I plan to post anything interesting in the news about animals and any petitions needing signing or even just an opinion i have on the way an animal is treated. I also plan to do some of my own little investigations on how places are treating there animals, or the truths behind how a restaurant is cooking there meat. Pretty much anything i can think of. Also i will put up recipes too. (vegetarian of course!) The environment will be another thing i plan to write about. I love Eco-Friendly tips so i will share them with ya as soon as i hear them myself.

Well that's pretty much it for this blog!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://theeco-friendlyvegetarian.blogspot.com/2009/01/very-first-blog-intro.html' title='Very First Blog!
